First to Reach North and South Pole
Roald Amundsen makes today’s extremists look like children. This Norwegian explorer was the first to reach the North and the South Pole. He didn’t wear a parka, instead he wore animal skin because it keeps the cold out even when wet. Upon reaching the North Pole by plane, Amundsen and his crew had to fashion an airstrip out of ice. Shovelling 600 tons of ice they lived on one pound of food a day for three weeks. In June 1928, Amundsen set out on an arctic rescue mission. His plane disappeared and has never been found.
