Invented the stethoscope
As a youth in France, Laennec took long country walks, danced, studied Greek and wrote poetry. Then he plunged into the study of medicine and became a legend. He was the first to name many diseases, like cirrhosis and melanoma, but Laennec's crowning achievement was the invention of the stethoscope. Perhaps his greatest legacy was his kindness and dedication to the poor. This great medical pioneer died of tuberculosis in 1826.
